The Story Behind the Zenmaster Limited Edition
The pOrtahl Zenmaster Limited Edition is a 25-piece crystallized titanium watch inspired by Aizuri-e, a Japanese art genre from the 19th century known for woodblock prints in various shades of blue.
For this edition, we wanted to take the signature Zenmaster dial somewhere new.
The result is a blue gradient Ice Crystal Titanium dial, combining naturally formed titanium crystal structures with our one-of-one engraved Zen garden patterns.
In blue, these Zen patterns begin to look like something else entirely: water in motion.
What is Aizuri-e?
Aizuri-e is a style of Japanese woodblock printing characterized by the dominant use of blue pigments.
The art form became especially popular in Japan during the 19th century, when a newly imported pigment called Prussian blue became increasingly available to Japanese artists.
Unlike many traditional blue pigments, Prussian blue offered artists a rich, deep colour that could be used in different shades and tones.
Artists began creating prints almost entirely in blue, ranging from dark indigo-like tones to much lighter shades.
These works became known as 'Aizuri-e'.
The Dutch connection
There is another part of the Aizuri-e story that made it particularly interesting to us.
Prussian blue was introduced to Japan through Dutch trade.
At the time, Japan's international trade was heavily restricted, with Dutch merchants maintaining a unique trading relationship with the country.
The arrival and later wider availability of Prussian blue gave Japanese artists a new way to work with colour and helped shape the visual identity of Aizuri-e.
For pOrtahl, a Dutch watch brand creating a watch inspired by Japanese design, that connection felt surprisingly fitting.
From deep indigo to light blue
Its color is one of the most obvious connections between Aizuri-e and the Zenmaster Limited Edition.
Aizuri-e artists often worked with different shades of blue within a single composition to create depth, movement and atmosphere.
We wanted to translate that idea onto this dial.
Each Zenmaster Limited Edition dial is heat-coloured into a gradient that moves between deep indigo blue and lighter blue tones.
The colour changes depending on the angle and lighting, allowing different parts of the dial to reveal themselves as the watch moves on the wrist.
But it is when the colour meets the Zenmaster pattern that the inspiration really comes to life.
When a Zen garden becomes water in motion
The original Zenmaster dial is inspired by the carefully raked gravel found in Japanese Zen gardens.
Its engraved lines represent stillness, repetition and calm.
Colour those same lines blue, however, and their meaning starts to change.
They begin to resemble ripples, currents and waves.
Water was a recurring subject in Japanese woodblock printing and appears frequently in Aizuri-e, sometimes as perfectly still water and sometimes as something far more turbulent.
That duality felt closely connected to what the Zenmaster represents.
Stillness and motion. Calm and chaos.
Depending on where you look on the dial, the engraved lines can feel almost completely still or like water moving across the surface.
A dial made from Ice Crystal Titanium
Underneath the blue lies another layer that makes every Zenmaster Limited Edition different.
The dial is made from Ice Crystal Titanium, also known as crystallized titanium.
Through a specialized heating and cooling process, the natural crystal structure of the titanium is brought to the surface.
Large, organic crystalline formations begin to appear across the metal.
Because these structures form naturally, no two dials develop the same pattern.
We then combine this natural crystal structure with the signature Zenmaster engraving.
Each engraving is generated individually, meaning the Zen pattern itself is also different on every watch, just like on the original Zenmaster.
The result is two layers of uniqueness on a single dial: A naturally unique titanium crystal structure and a unique engraved Zen pattern.
Like brushstrokes beneath the surface
The crystallized titanium adds something we could never have created through engraving alone.
Underneath the blue colour and Zen pattern, the organic crystal structures create irregular lines, shapes and textures.
In certain light, they almost resemble the brushstrokes of an old painting coming through the surface of the dial.
It was never something we could completely control. And that is exactly what makes it interesting. We didn't know how it would come out, but the result is just breathtaking.
The engraving is precise and intentional. The titanium underneath is organic and unpredictable. Once again, order and chaos meet on the same dial.
25 watches. 25 different dials. No two alike.
Every Zenmaster Limited Edition watch features:
- An Ice Crystal Titanium dial
- A dark-to-light blue gradient inspired by Aizuri-e
- A naturally unique titanium crystal structure
- A one-of-one Zenmaster pattern engraving
- A dial that will never be reproduced exactly
Even within a collection of only 25 watches, no two pieces are the same.
That is ultimately what we wanted this Limited Edition to be.
Not simply a different colour of the Zenmaster, but a new interpretation of its original idea.
One that brings together Aizuri-e, a Dutch connection, crystallized titanium and the Zenmaster's signature Zen garden pattern in a single dial.
Made once, and then never again.
